Buffett $1 Retained Earnings

Warren Buffett’s rule for management: every $1 of profit a company keeps instead of paying out should create at least $1 of market value. We sum net income minus dividends paid over the last 4–5 fiscal years, compare the change in market cap, and pair the result with Return on Equity, P/E and Debt-to-Equity benchmarks. Scores refresh weekly. Read the guide · Cross-check the Accounting Anomalies hub

1. Retained earnings generated. For each fiscal year in the window we take net income from the income statement and subtract dividends actually paid from the cash-flow statement, then sum the years. This is what management kept.

2. Change in market cap. Market cap at the base fiscal year-end (that day’s unadjusted close × that year’s basic share count) compared with today’s market cap.

3. Ratio. Change in market cap ÷ retained earnings. Buffett’s bar: every $1 retained should have created at least $1 of market value.

Window. The last 4–5 fiscal years (minimum 3), shown per row. Our price feed carries five years of daily history, so the base year is the oldest fiscal year-end still inside that limit. Because the result is a per-dollar ratio, a 4-year and a 5-year window are directly comparable.

Combo score. One point each for ROE ≥ 15%, P/E ≤ 25, D/E < 1.0 and a passing $1 test. 4/4 is the “perfect combo” — highly profitable, reasonably priced, financially safe, and proven to compound kept profits.

Perfect combo — high ROE, fair P/E, low debt, passes the $1 test
